Ringing conference 2025

This year, 120 ringers came together again for the ringing conference. The conference is organised every year by the Ringing Centre of the Institute of avian research and was held this year together with the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. The conferences wide range of presentations from the field, scientific analyses and nature conservation-related applications are organised for the 220 ringers from the Helgoland Ornithological Institute's area of responsibility (north-west Germany). Among other topics, the latest ringing figures from last year were presented by Olaf Geiter: in 2024, 210,000 birds from 440 species were ringed. The ringers ring on average 42 days a year, with individual ringers ringing birds for up to 307 days last year.

Furthermore, the longest-serving ringer, Hans Dieter Martens, who has been ringing birds for 70 years, was honoured at the conference. Hans Dieter Martens has ringed an average of 5 birds a day and with that made a very significant contribution to bird research.
