Welcome to the website of the Institute of Avian Research!

The Institute of Avian Research "Vogelwarte Helgoland" (IAR) is a non-university research institute in the portfolio of the Lower Saxonian Ministry of Science and Cultural Affairs.

The Institute members conduct fundamental research on the complex relationships between birds and their organic and inorganic environments.
The central research foci are bird migration and life history biology. In addition, the Institute houses the Bird Ringing Centre for Northwest Germany.

In memory of Dr Ommo Hüppop

The members of the Institute of Avian Research mourn the loss of

Dr Ommo Hüppop, who passed away on 26 March 2024.

Our institute has lost a wonderful colleague, a world-renowned ornithologist and a dedicated conservationist whose great commitment to the institute continued even after his retirement. As head of the “Vogelwarte Helgoland”, Ommo shaped research on seabirds throughout the annual cycle for decades, and developed Helgoland into a unique centre for bird migration research. Ommo will remain unforgotten.

Our thoughts are with his family.

On behalf of all colleagues at the Institute of Avian Research
