The members of the Institute of Avian Research mourn the loss of Dr Ommo Hüppop, who passed away on 26 March 2024.

Our institute has lost a wonderful colleague, a world-renowned ornithologist and a dedicated conservationist whose great commitment to the institute continued even after his retirement. As head of the “Vogelwarte Helgoland”, Ommo shaped research on seabirds throughout the annual cycle for decades, and developed Helgoland into a unique centre for bird migration research. Ommo will remain unforgotten.
