Science explained by kids? How does that sound?

That’s exactly what you’ll find out (or rather, hear!) here: in the kids4kids Podcast – a podcast that invites you to discover science from a new perspective. Together with six school students from different schools in Wilhelmshaven – Charlotte, Greta, Lea-Marleen, Milan, Tobias, and Noah – a unique format was created in which kids ask their own questions, conduct interviews, and communicate scientific content about bird migration from their own point of view.

Across 35 authentic podcast episodes, the series explores questions such as why migratory birds migrate in the first place, how they find their way, and the challenges they face on their journeys, which often span thousands of kilometers. The conversations led by our six young communicators are complemented by interviews with researchers, who answer the students’ questions, provide insights into their work, and explain current scientific findings in an accessible way. Individual episodes focus on different migratory bird species, including blackcap, robin, red knot, common tern, greylag goose, and white stork, while also addressing broader topics such as migration behavior and strategies, navigation, climate change, and scientific research.

The format is designed to be accessible across age groups and is aimed at children, young people, and adults alike. It is also well suited for use in educational settings: teachers can integrate the podcast into lessons or project days to introduce scientific topics in an engaging and accessible way. The podcast was developed, planned, and produced in close collaboration between school students and researchers. The recordings took place in April 2025 at the Institute of Avian Research – in our small, but professional “podcast studio”, set up especially for this project:
